Rome is not a late city by southern European standards, and knowing that saves a long walk.

Closing Time Is Real

Most neighbourhood places are shut by one. What stays open later is concentrated, and it is not evenly distributed across the city.

Sunday to Wednesday, assume everything closes early. The late city is a Thursday-to-Saturday phenomenon almost everywhere except the student quarters.

San Lorenzo

The university quarter is the reliable answer, and it runs later and cheaper than anywhere central. It is scruffy, covered in posters and entirely unbothered about it.

It is also genuinely local in a way Trastevere no longer quite is, which is the main argument for the tram ride.

Getting Home

The metro stops earlier than people expect. Night buses exist and are slow. Taxis are metered, must be taken from a rank or booked, and will not be flagged down in the street.

Work out the way home before the last drink rather than after it. Rome is safe and walkable, but it is also large, and the historic centre is confusing at two in the morning.
